The Latvian History Museum is the largest treasury of Latvian material culture. In 1896 it was opened as the Museum of the Science Commission of the Latvian Society of Riga. In order to better understand its origins and objectives, it is important to get acquainted with the situation in Rīga more than a hundred years ago.
